Extending canopy lifespan replacement
We replaced the tensile fabric membranes at Sophia Gardens Stadium, delivering a refreshed appearance and extending the operational life of the seating stand canopies.
Renewing Performance Without Rebuilding
The existing seating stand canopies at Sophia Gardens had reached the end of their design life, requiring intervention to maintain performance, safety and visual quality. The brief focused on replacing the membranes while retaining as much of the original structure as possible.
Working within a live stadium environment added further complexity. The solution needed to minimise disruption, maintain programme certainty and ensure the upgraded system would deliver long-term durability without the need for full structural replacement.

Targeted Replacement
We removed the existing membranes and supplied and installed new tensile fabric coverings to both the Croeso and Pro Steel Engineering Stands. Alongside this, we carried out detailed inspections of the supporting steelwork to assess its suitability for reuse, refurbishing elements where required to ensure continued structural performance.
The new PVC membranes were carefully specified and installed to deliver improved longevity and a clean, refreshed finish. By focusing on selective replacement rather than full reconstruction, the project maximised value while reducing both cost and programme impact.
Sustainability was also a key consideration. In line with our zero waste to landfill approach, we identified reuse opportunities for the removed fabric, repurposing it for secondary applications where structural performance was no longer critical.

A Refreshed Stadium, Built to Last
The completed works have given Sophia Gardens a renewed visual identity while extending the lifespan of its canopy structures for years to come. The upgraded membranes deliver improved performance and reliability, ensuring the stands remain fit for purpose in a demanding sporting environment.
By retaining and refurbishing the existing steelwork, the project demonstrates a practical and sustainable approach to asset renewal, preserving value where possible while upgrading critical elements. The result is a cost-effective, low-impact intervention that enhances both appearance and performance, reinforcing the long-term usability of the stadium.
