Delivering a retractable fabric roof for flexible hospitality space
We designed and installed a retractable tensile roof system at Guildford Harbour Hotel, creating a flexible, all-weather terrace for dining and events.
Maximising Outdoor Space Year-Round
The Guildford Harbour Hotel required a solution that would allow its central terrace to be used more effectively throughout the year. As a hospitality environment, the space needed to support al fresco dining and events while maintaining the quality and character expected of a four-star venue.
The challenge was to introduce weather protection without enclosing the space permanently. The system needed to provide shade in strong sunlight, shelter in light rain, and the flexibility to open fully when conditions allowed, all while integrating cleanly with the surrounding architecture.

A Flexible, Retractable Roof System
We worked with a pre-designed En-Fold retractable roof system, providing the structural steel support and manufacturing the bespoke fabric panels to suit the project requirements.
The system uses Tenara fabric, selected for its durability, high translucency and suitability for folding applications. This allows the roof to retract smoothly while maintaining long-term performance and visual quality.
Integrated guttering was incorporated into the design, ensuring effective water management during operation. The result is a clean, efficient system that balances functionality with a refined architectural finish.

A Versatile Space for Dining and Events
The completed retractable roof has transformed the hotel’s terrace into a flexible, all-weather environment. Guests can enjoy the space in a range of conditions, from open-air dining in good weather to sheltered use during light rain or strong sun.
By introducing adaptability without compromising on quality, the project enhances both the usability and commercial value of the space. It demonstrates how retractable tensile systems can unlock the full potential of hospitality environments, creating spaces that respond to changing conditions while maintaining a consistent guest experience.
