Mark Smith
Director | Technical Sales

Mark has worked in the construction industry for more than 50 years, including over 30 years in the tensile fabric sector, bringing a huge breadth of practical and technical experience to Base Structures. Following a degree in Civil Engineering from Portsmouth Polytechnic, he completed his professional training with Higgs and Hill, building experience across a wide variety of construction projects ranging from deep drainage and roadworks through to housing developments and multi-storey office buildings.
As a Director at Base Structures, Mark provides overarching support across the design, sales and construction sides of the business. His extensive industry knowledge and practical approach have helped guide the delivery of many of the company’s most significant projects over the years.
Projects that stand out during his time at Base include the Lord’s Mound Stand canopy, the London 2012 Olympic Basketball Arena and Up at The O2, all projects that showcase the combination of engineering, collaboration and problem-solving that defines the company’s work. Mark enjoys the variety that comes with working in construction and values being part of projects that bring together different disciplines and specialist teams to create something unique. His decades of experience across both traditional construction and tensile structures give him a broad perspective on project delivery and the challenges involved in complex builds.
Outside of work, Mark has been married for nearly 40 years and enjoys travelling across Europe in a motorhome with his wife, as well as exploring further afield whenever possible. He also spends much of his spare time helping his children renovate their homes, continuing a lifelong passion for construction and problem-solving away from the office.
