Delivering to a Fixed Deadline

The Eden Project required a tensile fabric roof to cover a new ice rink and events arena, forming part of the celebrations for the National Lottery’s 10th Anniversary.

The project demanded a solution that could be delivered quickly and reliably, within a tight programme and under the scrutiny of a nationally significant event. The structure needed to provide effective weather protection while maintaining the open, accessible character of the Eden Project—one of the UK’s most distinctive visitor destinations.

Balancing speed of delivery with performance and visual quality was central to the brief.

A Lightweight Roof, Engineered for Speed

We designed, manufactured and installed a tensile fabric roof structure using a PVC membrane, creating a lightweight enclosure capable of spanning the ice rink and event space efficiently.

The use of tensile fabric allowed for rapid installation, reducing the structural demands on the supporting framework while maintaining durability and weather resistance. The system was engineered to provide consistent coverage across the arena, supporting both skating activities and wider event use.

By focusing on simplicity and efficiency in both design and installation, the structure was delivered within programme constraints, ensuring readiness for the high-profile anniversary celebrations.

A Flexible Space for Seasonal Use

The completed structure enabled the Eden Project to host a fully operational ice rink and event space, adding a new dimension to its visitor offering. The covered environment supports seasonal activities, including winter skating events that continue to attract visitors each year.

Lightweight in appearance but robust in performance, the canopy provides effective shelter while maintaining a sense of openness that aligns with the wider ethos of the site. Its flexibility allows the space to be used for a range of activities beyond ice skating, supporting the Eden Project’s role as both an educational and cultural destination.

The project demonstrates how tensile architecture can deliver fast, efficient solutions for event-led environments by combining speed, adaptability and performance to meet demanding programme requirements.
