Covering a Rooftop Space

As part of a major redevelopment, Bath Racecourse required a tensile canopy to shelter the rooftop terrace of the new Langridge Grandstand. Positioned above a premium hospitality and viewing area, the structure needed to provide protection from the elements while maintaining uninterrupted views across the track.

The challenge was defined by scale and exposure. The twin cone structures measured approximately 36m by 16m, sitting in an elevated position. Delivering a solution that could perform reliably in this environment, while integrating with the architectural intent of the grandstand, required careful engineering and planning.

A Twin Cone Canopy

We designed, manufactured and installed a bespoke twin cone tensile fabric canopy, creating a bold efficient solution that responds to both function and form.

The conical geometry was selected to efficiently manage structural loads while delivering a distinctive architectural presence. The PVC membrane is tensioned across the steel framework to create a clean, sculptural form that complements the grandstand and acts as a visible landmark across the racecourse.

Given the exposed location, the structure was engineered to withstand significant wind forces, ensuring stability and long-term performance. Integrated drainage was developed within the canopy design, collecting and managing rainwater to prevent runoff into the spectator areas below.

A Landmark Space for Racing and Events

The completed canopy defines the rooftop experience at the Langridge Grandstand, providing a sheltered yet open environment that enhances both race-day viewing and non-race day events. With panoramic views across the course, the space now functions as a destination for hospitality, conferences and social gatherings.

Visually, the twin cone structure establishes a strong identity for the grandstand, reinforcing its position as a modern, high-quality venue.
