Andy Traynor

Director & Founder

Andy has been involved in the tensile fabric industry since 1988, building decades of experience across a wide range of complex and high-profile projects before founding Base Structures in 2002. As a Director, he has played a key role in shaping the company’s reputation for delivering ambitious tensile architecture and engineering projects both in the UK and internationally.

Over the years, Andy has worked on many of Base Structures’ most recognised projects, including the Walkway over The O2, the London 2012 Basketball Arena, the Velodrome and Shooting Arenas, the Sumatran Tiger Enclosure at ZSL London Zoo, the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion and the ‘Cocoon’ at the JS Bach Chamber Music Hall with Zaha Hadid Architects. He also led work on the Mount Stand canopy at Lord’s Cricket Ground, alongside many other complex and collaborative projects.

Andy thrives on bringing together architects, engineers, contractors and specialist installers to turn ambitious ideas into reality. His experience spans every stage of a project, from early concept development through to delivery on site, with a particular passion for solving technical challenges and finding practical ways to realise complex designs. What continues to motivate him is the variety of the work and the opportunity to help create structures that are both functional and visually striking. He enjoys working closely with talented teams and clients to push projects forward, particularly when they involve unusual engineering or architectural challenges.

Alongside his engineering and construction experience, Andy has always had a strong connection to the creative industries, particularly within arts, cultural and festival environments. Throughout his career he has worked closely with artists and event teams on projects that blur the line between engineering and creative expression, helping deliver high-profile art installations. This creativity helps push forward Base's approach to collaboration with arts and exhibition teams.

Outside of work, Andy enjoys spending time gardening with his grandchildren, bird watching and visiting the theatre.
