Improving Passenger Flow

As part of the East Terminal development at Edinburgh Airport, the commercial team required a series of landside canopies to improve passenger experience and movement across key arrival and departure points. The scheme needed to define new routes between transport hubs, including taxi zones, bus stops and terminal access, while providing protection from the elements.

The challenge was to deliver multiple structures across a busy, operational airport environment, each with its own functional requirements, while maintaining a consistent architectural language. The canopies needed to be durable, efficient to install and capable of integrating seamlessly with the wider terminal expansion.

A Multi-Canopy Scheme

We designed, manufactured and installed a coordinated suite of tensile fabric structures, comprising two long pedestrian walkway canopies, a bus stop canopy and a large terminus canopy.

Working closely with design engineers Tony Hogg Design and steel fabricators Miller Fabrication, we developed the primary steel structures alongside a bespoke fabric interface system. The installation included 44 individual PVC roof membranes, each carefully detailed to ensure consistent performance and visual continuity across the scheme.

The modular nature of the system allowed efficient fabrication and installation, while the tensile fabric solution provided a lightweight yet robust structure capable of withstanding the demands of a high-traffic transport environment.

Enhancing the Passenger Experience at Scale

The completed canopy scheme delivers clear, sheltered routes across the terminal forecourt, improving wayfinding and comfort for passengers moving between transport connections and the terminal. By providing continuous weather protection, the structures support a smoother, more intuitive journey through the airport.

Visually, the canopies establish a strong, cohesive identity for the East Terminal development, reinforcing its presence as a modern transport hub in the UK.
