Delivering a coastal canopy for a revitalised public space
We supplied and installed a tensile fabric canopy at Portrush seafront, creating a sheltered performance space as part of the wider regeneration of Station Square.
Designing for Exposure and Public Use
Portrush is a popular coastal destination in Northern Ireland, known for its open seafront and challenging weather conditions. As part of a wider regeneration programme, the redevelopment of Station Square introduced a new amphitheatre space for public performances and community events.
The challenge was to provide effective shelter in an exposed, maritime environment without compromising the openness and character of the space. The canopy needed to withstand strong coastal winds and unpredictable conditions, while enhancing the usability of the amphitheatre for both performers and visitors.

A Robust System
We supplied and installed a Cambrian canopy from our pre-designed range, selected for its ability to perform reliably in harsh environments. Manufactured as a single, continuous piece, the membrane provides strength, durability and consistent performance in high wind conditions.
The structure is supported by two inclined masts, creating a sweeping, shell-like form that reflects the maritime character of the location. This simple but effective geometry allows the canopy to span the amphitheatre while maintaining a lightweight, open appearance.
Installation presented its own challenges, with high wind speeds delaying the safe deployment of the untensioned membrane. A narrow weather window allowed the team to complete the installation just in time, ensuring the structure was ready for use within the programme constraints.

A Resilient Space for Coastal Events
The completed canopy has transformed the amphitheatre into a usable, all-weather venue, supporting performances, events and day-to-day public use along the seafront. Its form provides effective shelter while maintaining clear sightlines and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.
Visually, the canopy adds a distinctive architectural feature to the regenerated public realm, reinforcing Portrush’s identity as a vibrant coastal destination. More importantly, it enables the space to function consistently despite challenging weather conditions, ensuring that events can go ahead and the seafront remains active throughout the year.
The project demonstrates how pre-designed tensile systems can deliver robust, efficient solutions in demanding environments, combining durability, speed of installation and strong visual impact in a single, well-considered intervention.
