Reimagining a Landmark at Scale

As part of a £4.5 million transformation of the NEC, the brief called for a complete reimagining of the external façades of Halls 1 and 5 to create a bold new identity for one of the UK’s busiest event venues.

The scale of the buildings presented a significant challenge, requiring a solution that could deliver visual impact across vast elevations while remaining lightweight, durable and efficient to install. The façade also needed to perform both day and night, enhancing the visitor experience for the millions of people passing through the site each year.

A Dynamic, Light-Responsive Façade

We designed, manufactured and installed a three-dimensional fabric façade system comprising a series of translucent pyramidal forms interspersed with large printed fabric panels.

The pyramids are supported by a steel framework and integrated with programmable LED backlighting, allowing the façade to transform through colour and light. This creates a dynamic external surface that responds to events and enhances the building’s presence both during the day and at night.

Delivered across approximately 6,800m² of fabric and steelwork, the project required close coordination and precise execution. From concept through to installation, the programme was completed in just five months, with site works delivered ahead of schedule.

A New Identity for a National Destination

The project took only 5 months from design through to installation. Our client was delighted that we finished a week ahead of schedule and on budget. This was largely achieved due to the proactive client team and the support of our regular subcontractors.

The completed façade has transformed the NEC into a more contemporary and visually engaging destination, aligning its external appearance with its evolving role as a major leisure and events hub.

By combining architectural form, printed graphics and programmable lighting, the installation delivers a bold, adaptable identity that enhances both arrival experience and brand presence. It stands as a clear example of how creative use of fabric architecture can be used at scale to revitalise existing buildings.
