Providing Shelter for External Lockers

Bootham School required a canopy solution to cover a series of external lockers, improving usability and protection from the elements for students throughout the year. The structures also needed to accommodate integrated lighting, ensuring the space remained functional during darker evenings following sports and extracurricular activities.

Set within a characterful campus and open grounds, the challenge was to introduce a modern canopy that would complement rather than compete with its surroundings. In addition, the installation programme was tightly constrained, with works required to be completed during the October half-term to avoid disruption to teaching.

Pre-Designed Canopies, Delivered Efficiently

We supplied and installed two Mendip 4-Bay canopies from our pre-designed range, providing a cost-effective solution without compromising on performance or visual quality.

The use of a pre-engineered system removed the need for bespoke design and engineering, allowing the project to progress quickly while maintaining structural integrity and consistency. The canopies were configured to support integrated lighting, enhancing usability and ensuring the space remained practical throughout the day and into the evening and night.

To meet the tight programme, installation was carefully planned and executed over a single weekend, ensuring the structures were fully operational in time for the return of students.

Seamlessly Integrated Practical Shelter

This playful canopy, with it’s sweeping structural masts, tastefully blends the link between old and new amongst the Georgian town houses that make up the school campus.

They provide a simple yet effective solution, protecting lockers from the elements while creating a more usable and organised external space. Their lightweight structure and clean detailing ensure they sit comfortably within their environment, bridging the gap between traditional architecture and modern facilities.

Beyond their functional role, the canopies contribute to the day-to-day experience of the school, supporting student movement, improving accessibility and enabling continued use of outdoor areas in all conditions.
