PRESS RELEASE - SaltSavers
September, 2011
Base Structures in collaboration with Dome UK, the country’s No.1 supplier of Road Salt Storage Solutions, have developed a clip together sheeting system that is cheap, safe to install and re-usable.
The UK Government imports and stores around 3,000,000 tonnes of road salt per year, 50% of which ends up stored outside, uncovered.

When rain falls on the exposed pile the salt dissolves and gets washed out eventually finding its way to natural water courses where it can suffocate the flora and fauna through over salination.
Wetted salt changes the consistency of the grit mixture which is the most common cause of breakdowns to the automatic grit spreading machinery.
Currently the solution to these problems involves covering the piles with large single sheets of fabric which are sewn together on site to stop them blowing away, but this can cause a number of problems when it comes to retrieving the salt beneath.
The new Salt Saver system is delivered to site in 3.2m roll widths and at lengths to suit each individual pile. The pieces are then simply clipped together to form one large cover which is laced with rope and weighted with salt bags.

No matter how large the pile our modular system is designed to be installed by no more than 3 people, with no special skills, equipment or material handling experience.
When access is required to the salt, the individual sheets are very simply unclipped, rolled up and stored for re-use. By reusing the same sheets time after time, there are obvious long-term cash-flow gains and environmental benefits too!
