The building measures 114m x 96m in plan and 23m high at the perimeter. It is a steel truss ‘skeleton’ frame. To this steel, our installation team bolted 10.5 Kilometres of aluminium extrusion into which they fed the large fabric panels that enclose the structure and form the interior space.

The largest individual panels are the roof sheets which weigh in at 3/4 of a tonne each. Equally large scissor lifts were used to elevate the panels to the roof perimeter from where they could be winched across the roof arches and bolted into place. A massive 100m long x 28mm dia cable was then laid across the fabric and tensioned to ensure that the main roof fabrics are held securely in place. Base Structures are also contracted to clean and maintain the structure up until the start of the London 2012 Games and then remove the fabric once the Games are complete.
