6 great examples of TEXO in practice

Jan 20, 2012

If you haven’t read our other blogs this month, a quick look at these...

Fabric enters the construction mainstream with TEXO
Creative and cost-effective cladding: the balancing act achieved

... will put you in the picture about the revolutionary new panel system, TEXO, which enables the latest architectural fabrics to be easily incorporated into mainstream construction.

Its success is its versatility, slashing of build time and cost effectiveness. So without further ado - here’s a few great examples of using TEXO to show you what’s possible:

1. Mesh Overcladding
In Germany, Deichmannstores used TEXO panels to overclad an existing glass façade and reduced the internal energy consumption of the store by over 40%. By using a mesh fabric you can still maintain views out of the building as demonstrated at Sports City Bergamo.

2. 3D building wrap
The brief for the Shanghai World Expo 2010 Pavilion was to create an uninterrupted rectangular space, while the architect was keen to avoid an ‘uninteresting box’ situation. The resulting TEXO ‘envelope’ created a natural soft box effect with recessed windows.

3. Graphics
By using fabrics that accept print or long life vinyls, applied graphics can create a head turning façade. Designers can use the whole building as their canvas, and can keep it fresh with the ability to swap out panels in the future.

4. Stadia refurbishment
Demolishing and rebuilding stadiums doesn’t come cheap. By recladding with TEXO these stadiums were rebranded and upgraded to great effect. Incorporating the sponsor’s advertising wasn’t a problem either.

5. Glass substitute
Nottingham University Samworth Academy used clear, single skin ETFE TEXO panels to cover a 900m2 unheated internal street as an alternative to an expensive and heavyweight glass roof. It doesn’t just provide shelter; it also lets in a lot of light – a design imperative as this particular ‘street’ is bordered with classrooms.

6. Sliding / folding sunscreens
Mounting TEXO panels on track adds a kinetic dimension. Whole elevations are transformed with sliding or folding panels allowing a flexible response to the sun and privacy. Similarly, panels can be mounted on castors for use as internal screens.

So that wraps up this month’s knowledge bank. For further examples and information on TEXO, you can look at our presentation or get in touch if you have a specific project you’d like to discuss. We’re always happy to give you our opinion on the best way to tackle a brief.

In the meantime, please do share any great examples you’ve come across.
